Clinical Overview
Acne Vulgaris, termed Yauvanapidika (eruptions of youth) or Mukhadushika in Ayurveda, is a common inflammatory skin condition. It results from a vitiation of Kapha and Vata doshas, along with Rakta dhatu (blood), leading to the obstruction of sebaceous glands and subsequent inflammation (Pitta involvement).
Emergency Warning Signs
Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:
- Sudden, severe, cystic acne onset in adulthood (requires endocrine workup)
- Severe scarring or keloid formation
- Signs of systemic infection (fever, spreading redness)
Symptomatology
Papules And Pustules

Nodules Or Cysts (in severe cases)
Clinical manifestation characterized by nodules or cysts (in severe cases). Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Erythema (redness)

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
Clinical manifestation characterized by post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Diagnostic Protocol
Ayurvedic Assessment
Assessment of Rakta dhatu impurity, Agni status, and bowel habits. Acne presenting as red/inflamed indicates Pitta dominance; deep/cystic indicates Kapha; dry/blackheads indicates Vata.

Classical Perspective
Samprapti (Pathogenesis)
Impaired digestion creates Ama, which enters the Rakta dhatu. Kapha and Vata push this impure blood to the surface of the skin. The thick Kapha blocks the hair follicles, and Pitta causes the localized inflammation and pus formation.
Dosha
Tridoshic, but primarily Kapha (causing sebum overproduction/blockage), Vata (causing the eruption), and Pitta (causing inflammation/redness).
Dhatu
Rasa, Rakta (blood), and Meda (sebum/fat).
Srotas
Raktavaha Srotas and Swedavaha Srotas (sweat/sebum channels).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need internal medicine for a skin problem?
In Ayurveda, the skin is an expression of internal health, specifically the blood (Rakta) and plasma (Rasa). Topical creams only treat the symptom. To prevent acne from recurring, we must purify the blood and correct the digestion internally.
Is Leech Therapy (Jalauka) really used for acne?
Yes, Raktamokshana (blood-letting) using medicinal leeches is an FDA-approved, highly effective classical Ayurvedic treatment for severe, cystic acne. It removes impure, stagnant blood directly from the site and injects natural anti-inflammatory peptides.
