Basti (Medicated Enema Therapy)
in Bengaluru
Basti is considered the 'Ardha Chikitsa' (half of all treatments) in Ayurveda. It involves the administration of medicated oils, decoctions, and herbal pastes into the colon via the rectum. Because the colon is the primary seat of Vata dosha, Basti is the most powerful therapy for all Vata-related neurological and musculoskeletal disorders.
Clinical Benefits
- Directly pacifies Vata dosha at its root location (colon)
- Delivers active pharmacological compounds directly to the highly vascularized enteric nervous system
- Modulates the gut microbiome and improves the gut-brain axis
- Significantly reduces systemic inflammation and joint pain
- Provides deep nourishment to bones (Asthi) and nerves (Majja) via absorption of short-chain fatty acids
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Patient undergoes local Snehana (oil massage) and Swedana (fomentation) on the abdomen and lower back
- • Preparation of the Basti emulsion (combining honey, rock salt, oil, herbal paste, and decoction in a specific sequence)
- • Patient lies on the left lateral position with the right leg flexed
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The medicated liquid is gently administered into the rectum using a specialized Basti Yantra (instrument). For Anuvasana (oil) Basti, the volume is small and retained for a longer period. For Niruha (decoction) Basti, the volume is larger and initiates an urge to defecate shortly after.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • Patient is allowed to evacuate the bowels
- • Resting in the supine position and light abdominal massage
- • Consumption of a light, warm meal (like Khichdi) after Niruha Basti
- • Observation of the evacuated materials for signs of proper detoxification
Patient FAQs
Is Basti the same as a conventional enema?
No. Conventional enemas use water to simply flush and cleanse the lower bowel. Basti uses a highly specific emulsion of oils and herbal decoctions designed for systemic absorption. It acts primarily as a delivery mechanism for systemic medication rather than just a local bowel cleanse.
How does treating the colon help my joint pain or sciatica?
In Ayurveda, Vata governs all movement, including nerve impulses and joint mobility, and its headquarters is the colon. Furthermore, modern science recognizes the enteric nervous system (gut-brain axis). Basti delivers anti-inflammatory herbal compounds directly into the systemic circulation via the highly absorptive colonic mucosa, bypassing liver metabolism, leading to rapid relief in distal joints and nerves.
