Shirodhara (Neural Relaxation Therapy)
in Bengaluru

Shirodhara is a profound classical Ayurvedic therapy involving the continuous, rhythmic pouring of warm medicated oil, herbal decoctions, or buttermilk over the forehead (specifically the Ajna Chakra). This continuous stream deeply relaxes the nervous system, profoundly reducing stress and regulating brain wave activity.

Clinical Benefits

  • Significantly reduces cortisol levels and alleviates severe stress/anxiety
  • Shifts EEG brain patterns towards alpha and theta waves (deep relaxation)
  • Improves sleep architecture and treats chronic insomnia
  • Reduces the frequency and intensity of migraines
  • Lowers essential hypertension via autonomic nervous system modulation

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Patient assessment to determine the appropriate liquid (Taila, Takra, Kwatha, or Ksheera)
  • Gentle head and shoulder massage (Shiro Abhyanga) to initiate relaxation
  • Patient lies comfortably supine on a specialized wooden Droni (treatment table)
  • Eyes and ears are covered to protect them from the liquid

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

A specially designed vessel (Dhara Patra) is suspended above the patient's head. Warm liquid is poured in a continuous, uninterrupted, oscillating stream across the forehead for 45 minutes, inducing a trance-like state of deep physical and mental relaxation.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • The head is gently wiped and wiped clean
  • A brief rest period is advised to allow the nervous system to recalibrate
  • Warm water bath is recommended after an hour
  • Patient is advised to avoid bright lights, loud noises, and cold drafts

Patient FAQs

How does Shirodhara affect the brain?

Clinical studies demonstrate that the continuous rhythmic pressure and temperature of the liquid on the forehead stimulate the somatic sensors, sending signals to the brainstem. This leads to decreased sympathetic tone (fight or flight) and increased parasympathetic tone (rest and digest), altering EEG activity to resemble a deep meditative state.

Will my hair be ruined by the oil?

The oil used is highly beneficial for scalp and hair health (often preventing hair fall and premature graying). While your hair will be heavily oiled post-treatment, it can be easily washed out with warm water and a mild herbal shampoo after the designated resting period.
