Clinical Overview
A cervicogenic headache is a secondary headache caused by a disorder of the cervical spine (neck) and its component bone, disc, and soft tissue elements. In Ayurveda, this corresponds directly to 'Manyastambha' (cervical spondylosis or neck stiffness) leading to 'Shirashoola' (headache).
Emergency Warning Signs
Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:
- Headache accompanied by high fever or stiff neck that prevents touching chin to chest
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness radiating down the arms
- Sudden, severe 'thunderclap' headache
- Headache following acute neck trauma or whiplash
Symptomatology
Pain Originating In Neck
Clinical manifestation characterized by pain originating in neck. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
One Sided Head Pain
Clinical manifestation characterized by one sided head pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Reduced Neck Flexibility
Clinical manifestation characterized by reduced neck flexibility. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Pain Worsened By Neck Movement
Clinical manifestation characterized by pain worsened by neck movement. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Pain Radiating To Front Of Head
Clinical manifestation characterized by pain radiating to front of head. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Diagnostic Protocol
Ayurvedic Assessment
Nadi Pariksha indicates localized Vata Prakopa and often Ama (metabolic toxins) in the Asthi (bone) and Sandhi (joints) of the cervical region. Physical examination reveals 'Khavaigunya' in the Manya (cervical area).

Classical Perspective
Samprapti (Pathogenesis)
Due to poor posture, trauma, or degenerative changes (Vata aggravation with age), the cervical vertebrae and discs degenerate (Asthi Kshaya). This structural change compresses the cervical nerves. The pain originates in the neck but is referred to the head via the trigeminocervical nucleus. Vata is the primary dosha involved, causing pain, stiffness, and degeneration.
Dosha
Primary: Vata (Vyana Vayu)
Dhatu
Asthi (Bone), Majja (Nerve/Bone Marrow), Mamsa (Muscle), Snayu (Ligaments)
Srotas
Asthivaha Srotas, Majjavaha Srotas

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you treating my neck when my head hurts?
In a cervicogenic headache, the root cause is in the neck (cervical spine). Nerve pathways from the upper neck connect to pain centers in the head. By healing the cervical discs and muscles using therapies like Greeva Basti, the referred pain to the head disappears automatically.
Can Ayurveda reverse cervical spondylosis causing this headache?
While structural bone changes (like osteophytes) cannot be fully reversed, Ayurvedic therapies are highly effective at rehydrating degenerated discs, reducing inflammation, and relieving nerve compression, effectively making you symptom-free and preventing further degeneration.
