Clinical Overview

Depressive disorders are characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness, loss of interest, and profound lethargy. In Ayurveda, this is understood as Vishada. While Vata depression manifests as fearful and anxious, and Pitta depression as angry and critical, the most common profound depression is a severe Kapha and Tamas imbalance—a state of heavy, dark stagnation blocking the mind (Manovaha Srotas). Treatment focuses on stimulating Agni, clearing mental blockages, and uplifting the spirit (Satvavajaya).

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Active thoughts of suicide, self-harm, or severe hopelessness
  • Complete inability to eat, bathe, or get out of bed
  • Psychotic symptoms (hallucinations or delusions)

Symptomatology

Fatigue

Clinical manifestation characterized by fatigue. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Diagnostic Protocol

Ayurvedic Assessment

Detailed Ashtavidha Pariksha (eight-fold examination), focusing heavily on Manasika (psychological) evaluation.

Required Laboratory Tests

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Depression typically involves weakened Agni leading to Ama. This Ama, combined with aggravated Kapha and Tamas, physically and energetically blocks the Manovaha Srotas (channels of the mind). The mind loses its natural light and motivation, sinking into inertia.

Dosha

Kapha and Vata, heavily influenced by Tamas (inertia)

Dhatu

Rasa, Majja

Srotas

Manovaha Srotas, Rasavaha Srotas

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ayurveda a substitute for antidepressants or therapy?

Ayurveda is a powerful integrative approach. While severe clinical depression requires psychotherapy and sometimes allopathic medication, Ayurvedic treatments (like Nasya and Medhya herbs) profoundly improve mental clarity, energy levels, and emotional resilience, addressing the physiological root of the stagnation.
