Clinical Overview

Diabetic Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can occur if you have diabetes, most often damaging nerves in your legs and feet. In Ayurveda, this is a serious complication of Madhumeha (Diabetes) known as Upadrava, where high blood sugar (vitiated Kapha and Meda) blocks the micro-channels, starving the nerves (Majja) and aggravating Vata.

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • A wound or ulcer on the foot that isn't healing (Risk of infection and amputation)
  • Complete loss of feeling in the feet
  • Rapid heartbeat at rest or dizziness when standing up (Autonomic neuropathy)
  • Sudden changes in digestion, bowel, or bladder function

Symptomatology

Numbness And Tingling

Clinical manifestation characterized by numbness and tingling. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Burning Sensation

Clinical manifestation characterized by burning sensation. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Sharp Stabbing Pain

Clinical manifestation characterized by sharp stabbing pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Loss Of Coordination

Clinical manifestation characterized by loss of coordination. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Extreme Sensitivity To Touch

Clinical manifestation characterized by extreme sensitivity to touch. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Diagnostic Protocol

Ayurvedic Assessment

Nadi Pariksha reveals 'Avarana' (blockage). Heavy, sweet qualities of Kapha and Meda (fat) physically block the Vyana Vayu (circulating energy) in the peripheral Srotas. This creates severe Agni Mandya at the tissue level, preventing the Majja Dhatu (nerves) from receiving nutrition.

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Prolonged high blood sugar creates a thick, sticky metabolic toxin (Ama). This Ama coats the inner linings of the blood vessels (Raktavaha Srotas) and nerves (Majjavaha Srotas). Denied of oxygen and nutrients (Rasa), the nerve tissues dry out and die. This emptiness causes local Vata dosha to spike, resulting in burning, tingling, and sharp pain.

Dosha

Primary: Vata (Vyana Vayu) and Kapha (Kledaka Kapha); Secondary: Pitta (if burning is severe)

Dhatu

Meda (Fat), Majja (Nervous Tissue), Rakta (Blood)

Srotas

Majjavaha Srotas, Raktavaha Srotas, Medovaha Srotas

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ayurveda cure Diabetic Neuropathy completely?

If caught very early, reversing the nerve damage is possible. However, in advanced cases, the goal of Ayurvedic management is to strictly halt progression by controlling blood sugar, and use regenerative therapies to significantly reduce pain, burning, and numbness to improve your quality of life.

Why do you focus on my digestion if the pain is in my feet?

In Ayurveda, the root of diabetic neuropathy is metabolic (Mandagni). Your body isn't processing sugars and fats correctly, leading to 'Ama' that clogs the vessels feeding your feet. By fixing the digestion and metabolism first, we stop the damage at the source before applying local oils to heal the nerves.
