Clinical Overview

Endometriosis is a painful condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. Ayurveda identifies this as a complex pathology involving Sannipataja (Tridoshic) imbalance, primarily driven by retrograde Apana Vata pushing Artava (menstrual tissue) into abnormal locations (ectopic growth). Management focuses on halting the ectopic growth, dissolving adhesions (Lekhana), and severely pacifying Apana Vata to relieve intense pain.

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe, unmanageable pelvic pain that disrupts daily life
  • Painful bowel movements or urination during periods, with visible blood
  • Sudden, sharp pelvic pain indicating a ruptured ovarian cyst (endometrioma)

Symptomatology

Pain

Clinical manifestation characterized by pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Vitiated Apana Vata forces Artava (menstrual blood/tissue) to flow backward (Pratiloma) through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity. Here, Pitta causes inflammation, and Kapha/Ama cause the tissue to adhere and form cysts (Granthi) and adhesions, leading to severe pain.

Dosha

Tridoshic: Vata (displacement), Pitta (inflammation), Kapha (adhesions)

Dhatu

Srotas

Artavavaha Srotas, Raktavaha Srotas

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ayurveda cure Endometriosis and remove cysts?

Endometriosis is a challenging, chronic condition. While large, complex endometriomas (chocolate cysts) may require surgical intervention, Ayurvedic therapies are highly effective at dissolving smaller adhesions, dramatically reducing pain, preventing further progression, and significantly improving fertility outcomes.
