Clinical Overview

Functional constipation is a bowel disorder characterized by difficult, infrequent, or seemingly incomplete defecation without an underlying anatomical cause. Ayurveda understands this as Vibandha, primarily a Vata (Apana Vata) disorder resulting in dryness and impaired downward movement in the colon (Purishavaha Srotas).

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding (black tarry stools or blood in vomit)
  • Severe, intractable abdominal pain

Symptomatology

Fatigue

Bloating

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Almost all GI disorders stem from Mandagni (weak digestive fire) leading to the formation of Ama. This Ama impairs the function of the Srotas (channels) and vitiates the Doshas (especially Vata in the colon, Pitta in the small intestine, and Kapha in the stomach), causing structural or functional pathology.

Dosha

Vata (Apana and Samana), Pitta (Pachaka), Kapha (Kledaka)

Dhatu

Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Medas

Srotas

Annavaha and Purishavaha Srotas

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Ayurveda treat chronic digestive issues?

Ayurveda focuses on the root cause by first correcting the digestive fire (Agni). We use personalized diets, herbal formulas to clear toxins (Ama), and Panchakarma therapies (like Basti) to restore normal gut motility and heal the intestinal lining.
