Clinical Overview
Hypertension, or High Blood Pressure, is a chronic condition where the force of blood against artery walls is too high. In Ayurveda, it is understood as a Tridoshic imbalance, often involving Vyana Vata (circulation), Sadhaka Pitta (emotions/heart), and Avalambaka Kapha, leading to increased pressure in the Rakta Vaha Srotas (blood channels).
Emergency Warning Signs
Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:
- Systolic BP > 180 or Diastolic > 120 (Hypertensive Crisis)
- Severe headache accompanied by confusion or blurred vision
- Chest pain or acute shortness of breath
- Weakness or numbness on one side of the face or body
Symptomatology
Headache (often morning headaches)
Clinical manifestation characterized by headache (often morning headaches). Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Dizziness Vertigo
Clinical manifestation characterized by dizziness vertigo. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Palpitations
Clinical manifestation characterized by palpitations. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Shortness Of Breath
Clinical manifestation characterized by shortness of breath. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Nosebleeds (in severe cases)
Clinical manifestation characterized by nosebleeds (in severe cases). Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Diagnostic Protocol
Ayurvedic Assessment
Nadi Pariksha often reveals a forceful, rapid pulse (Manduka/frog-like if Pitta dominant, or snake-like if Vata dominant). Assessment of mental stress and Agni.
Required Laboratory Tests
Imaging Modalities
Classical Perspective
Samprapti (Pathogenesis)
Ama (toxins) and vitiated Kapha cause stiffness and narrowing in the blood vessels. Vitiated Vata increases the force of circulation to push blood through these narrowed channels, while Pitta aggravation (stress/anger) further increases vascular tension.
Dosha
Tridoshic, but specifically Vyana Vata (controls blood flow) and Sadhaka Pitta (controls emotions/heart rhythm).
Dhatu
Rasa (plasma) and Rakta (blood).
Srotas
Rasa and Rakta Vaha Srotas.
Precision Treatment Protocol
Panchakarma Interventions
Classical Medicines
- sarpagandha ghan vati
- mukta vati
- brahmi vati
Key Herbs
- sarpagandha
- arjuna
- brahmi
- ashwagandha
- garlic
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ayurveda cure high blood pressure?
Essential hypertension is typically a lifestyle condition. Ayurveda can successfully manage and normalize blood pressure through herbs, diet, and stress management. Many patients are able to maintain normal BP without reliance on heavy allopathic medications, provided they maintain the lifestyle changes.
Is Shirodhara effective for hypertension?
Yes, Shirodhara is highly effective. The continuous pouring of warm oil on the forehead profoundly calms the autonomic nervous system, reducing sympathetic drive (fight or flight) and naturally lowering blood pressure and heart rate.
