Clinical Overview
Kidney stones (Ashmari) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. Ayurveda correlates this to Mutrashmari, caused by a combination of concentrated Kapha drying up due to Vata dosha, forming stone-like structures in the urinary tract. Treatment is highly effective and focuses on dissolving the stones (Bhedana), flushing them out (Mutrala), and preventing future recurrence by correcting metabolic fire (Agni).
Emergency Warning Signs
Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:
- Severe, sharp pain in the side and back, below the ribs (renal colic)
- Pink, red, or brown urine (hematuria) with foul smell
- Fever and chills accompanying the pain (indicating infection)
Symptomatology
Pain
Clinical manifestation characterized by pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Diagnostic Protocol
Ayurvedic Assessment
Detailed Ashtavidha Pariksha (eight-fold examination) including Nadi (pulse) and Jihva (tongue) analysis.
Required Laboratory Tests

Classical Perspective
Samprapti (Pathogenesis)
When Agni (digestive fire) is weak, Ama is formed. This Ama mixes with Kapha dosha in the urinary tract. Aggravated Apana Vata dries this morbid mixture, crystallizing it into Ashmari (stones) which obstruct the Mutravaha Srotas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ayurveda dissolve all types of kidney stones?
Ayurveda is highly successful in dissolving and flushing out most types of kidney stones (especially calcium oxalate and uric acid stones) up to a certain size (usually < 8-10mm). Larger stones or staghorn calculi may require surgical intervention, with Ayurveda serving as excellent post-operative care to prevent recurrence.
