Clinical Overview

Kyphosis is an exaggerated, forward rounding of the upper back. Ayurveda refers to spinal deformities as Kubjatwa, caused by chronic Vata aggravation weakening the supporting muscles and bones. While severe structural deformities may require modern orthopedics, our therapies (like generalized Pizhichil and targeted Greeva/Prishta Basti) focus on halting progression, relaxing tight anterior muscles, and strengthening weak posterior muscles.

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Sudden loss of bowel or bladder control (Cauda Equina Syndrome)
  • Saddle anesthesia (numbness in the groin/buttocks)
  • Severe, progressive motor weakness in legs or arms
  • Fever accompanied by severe spinal pain

Symptomatology

Pain

Clinical manifestation characterized by pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Numbness Tingling

Clinical manifestation characterized by numbness tingling. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Stiffness

Clinical manifestation characterized by stiffness. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Diagnostic Protocol

Ayurvedic Assessment

Nadi Pariksha confirming severe Vata pulse, assessment of Asthi Dhatu depletion and spinal alignment examination.

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Vitiated Vata localizes in the spine (Prishta/Kati/Greeva), drying up the Kapha that cushions the vertebrae. This leads to friction, disc desiccation, space narrowing, and eventual nerve compression.

Vata (Vyana and Apana Vayu)

Dhatu

Asthi, Majja, Mamsa, Snayu

Srotas

Asthivaha and Majjavaha Srotas

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ayurveda treat a herniated disc without surgery?

Yes, in many cases. Our therapy-first approach uses Kati/Greeva Basti to intensely lubricate the area, reduce localized inflammation, and relax the spasms causing the compression. This creates an environment for the disc to naturally heal and retract, often avoiding the need for surgery.
