Clinical Overview
Lumbar disc herniation occurs when the soft inner core of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in the tougher outer exterior, often pressing on nerves and causing severe lower back and leg pain. Ayurveda views this as an intense Vata aggravation in the Kati (lower back), leading to displacement (Chyuti) and compression. As a therapy-first hospital, our primary approach avoids immediate surgery by using intensive Kati Basti to deeply nourish and decompress the disc, alongside specialized localized steaming (Nadi Sweda).
Emergency Warning Signs
Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:
- Sudden loss of bowel or bladder control (Cauda Equina Syndrome)
- Saddle anesthesia (numbness in the groin/buttocks)
- Severe, progressive motor weakness in legs or arms
- Fever accompanied by severe spinal pain
Symptomatology
Pain
Clinical manifestation characterized by pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Numbness Tingling
Clinical manifestation characterized by numbness tingling. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Stiffness
Clinical manifestation characterized by stiffness. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.
Diagnostic Protocol
Ayurvedic Assessment
Nadi Pariksha confirming severe Vata pulse, assessment of Asthi Dhatu depletion and spinal alignment examination.
Required Laboratory Tests
Imaging Modalities
Classical Perspective
Samprapti (Pathogenesis)
Vitiated Vata localizes in the spine (Prishta/Kati/Greeva), drying up the Kapha that cushions the vertebrae. This leads to friction, disc desiccation, space narrowing, and eventual nerve compression.
Dosha
Vata (Vyana and Apana Vayu)
Dhatu
Asthi, Majja, Mamsa, Snayu
Srotas
Asthivaha and Majjavaha Srotas

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ayurveda treat a herniated disc without surgery?
Yes, in many cases. Our therapy-first approach uses Kati/Greeva Basti to intensely lubricate the area, reduce localized inflammation, and relax the spasms causing the compression. This creates an environment for the disc to naturally heal and retract, often avoiding the need for surgery.
