Clinical Overview

Obesity, known as Sthaulya in Ayurveda, is a metabolic disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of Meda Dhatu (adipose tissue/fat). It is considered a systemic condition resulting from a sluggish metabolic fire (Agni) that leads to the overproduction of fat tissue at the expense of other bodily tissues.

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe chest pain or extreme breathlessness on mild exertion
  • Sudden, unexplained, and rapid weight gain
  • Severe sleep apnea with daytime hypersomnolence

Symptomatology

Excessive Weight

Clinical manifestation characterized by excessive weight. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Fatigue On Exertion

Clinical manifestation characterized by fatigue on exertion. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Excessive Sweating

Clinical manifestation characterized by excessive sweating. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Diagnostic Protocol

Ayurvedic Assessment

Assessment of Jatharagni (digestive fire), Dhatvagni (tissue metabolism), and Medovaha Srotas obstruction.

Required Laboratory Tests

lipid-profile
thyroid-profile
fasting-insulin
lft

Imaging Modalities

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Impaired digestive fire leads to Ama formation. Kapha and Ama obstruct the channels of nutrition. Vata becomes trapped in the digestive tract, excessively stimulating hunger (Bhasmaka Agni), while tissue metabolism remains sluggish, converting all nutrition into fat.

Dosha

Aggravation of Kapha and Vata.

Dhatu

Excessive accumulation of Meda (fat), leading to depletion of subsequent Dhatus (Asthi, Shukra).

Srotas

Medovaha Srotas (fat channels) are obstructed by Ama and Kapha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ayurvedic weight loss fast?

Ayurveda focuses on sustainable, healthy fat loss rather than rapid water weight reduction. While you may see significant changes in the first month (especially with Panchakarma), the goal is to permanently reset your basal metabolic rate, which takes 60 to 90 days.

How does Udvartana help in weight loss?

Udvartana is a vigorous massage using herbal powders. It creates friction, generates heat, and deeply stimulates the lymphatic and metabolic systems, helping to break down subcutaneous fat (cellulite) and improve skin tone.
