Clinical Overview

Psoriatic Arthritis is an autoimmune form of arthritis that affects some people who have psoriasis. In Ayurveda, this complex disease (Vatarakta combined with Kushtha) reflects a deep-seated vitiation of Vata, Pitta, and Rakta (blood), alongside Ama. Our approach involves simultaneously treating the skin pathology and the joint inflammation through rigorous blood purification (Rakta Mokshana) and systemic detoxification.

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Sudden, severe swelling of entire fingers or toes (dactylitis or 'sausage digits')
  • Rapidly progressing joint destruction
  • Severe eye pain and redness (uveitis)

Symptomatology

Pain

Clinical manifestation characterized by pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Stiffness

Clinical manifestation characterized by stiffness. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Swelling

Clinical manifestation characterized by swelling. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Diagnostic Protocol

Ayurvedic Assessment

Detailed Ashtavidha Pariksha (eight-fold examination) including Nadi (pulse) and Jihva (tongue) analysis.

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Vitiated Vata and Pitta doshas drive Ama deep into the Rakta Dhatu (blood) and Twak (skin), causing psoriasis (Kushtha). Over time, this systemic toxicity penetrates the Asthi (bone) and Sandhi (joints), resulting in the severe, deforming inflammation of Psoriatic Arthritis (Vatarakta).

Dosha

Tridoshic, with prominent Vata and Pitta vitiation in the Rakta Dhatu

Dhatu

Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Asthi, Majja

Srotas

Raktavaha, Asthivaha, Twak (Skin)

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you treat the skin or the joints first in Psoriatic Arthritis?

In Ayurveda, we treat the systemic root cause (Ama in the Rakta Dhatu). By administering deep Shodhana (detoxification) like Virechana and Raktamokshana, both the skin lesions and the joint inflammation improve simultaneously because they share the same underlying pathology.
