Clinical Overview

Recurrent Tonsillitis involves repeated episodes of inflammation and infection of the tonsils. Ayurveda correlates this to Tundikeri, a condition primarily driven by Kapha and Rakta vitiation localized in the throat. Our approach avoids surgical removal (tonsillectomy) by deeply cleansing the respiratory tract, shrinking the hypertrophied tissue through localized herbal applications (Pratisarana), and rebuilding the local mucosal immunity to prevent future infections.

Emergency Warning Signs

Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:

  • Inability to swallow liquids due to severe pain or swelling
  • Difficulty breathing or severe sleep apnea (due to massive tonsil enlargement)
  • A bulge on one side of the throat with a muffled 'hot potato' voice (peritonsillar abscess)

Symptomatology

Pain

Clinical manifestation characterized by pain. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Fever

Clinical manifestation characterized by fever. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Swelling

Clinical manifestation characterized by swelling. Ayurvedic assessment involves evaluating the specific Dosha and Srotas involvement underlying this symptom.

Diagnostic Protocol

Ayurvedic Assessment

Detailed Ashtavidha Pariksha (eight-fold examination) including Nadi (pulse) and local examination.

Classical Perspective

Samprapti (Pathogenesis)

Vitiated Kapha and Rakta, aggravated by cold food or weather, lodge in the base of the throat (Kantha). This causes severe swelling, redness, and suppuration (Tundikeri) in the tonsillar crypts, obstructing the passage of food and air.

Dosha

Kapha and Rakta (Blood) dominance, often with Pitta involvement during acute infection

Dhatu

Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa

Srotas

Pranavaha Srotas, Annavaha Srotas

Panchakarma Interventions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Ayurveda prevent the need for a tonsillectomy?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. The tonsils are a crucial part of the immune system. Instead of removing them, Ayurvedic therapies shrink the swollen tissue (using scraping/Lekhana herbs like Kanchanara) and boost immunity, effectively stopping the cycle of recurrent infections.
