Clinical Overview
Tension-type headaches are the most common type of headache, feeling like a tight band is wrapped around your head. In Ayurveda, this is classically classified under 'Vataja Shirashoola', driven primarily by mental stress, lack of sleep, and physical tension in the neck and shoulders which block the upward flow of Prana (life energy) to the head.
Emergency Warning Signs
Seek immediate conventional medical care if you experience any of the following:
- Sudden, severe 'thunderclap' headache
- Headache accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, or decreased alertness
- Headache that worsens over days or weeks
- New onset headache in individuals over 50

Nadi Pariksha typically shows aggravated Vata, specifically Prana Vayu (governing the mind/head) and Vyana Vayu (governing circulation/muscles). Assessment of the neck (Greeva) often reveals severe muscle stiffness (Stambha).

Classical Perspective
Samprapti (Pathogenesis)
Mental stress, prolonged screen time, poor posture, or irregular eating habits lead to Vata aggravation. This dry, tense quality settles in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and scalp, creating stiffness. This stiffness blocks the natural micro-channels (Srotas), leading to the constant, dull pressure characteristic of tension headaches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are tension headaches different from migraines?
Yes. Tension headaches typically present as a dull, constant band-like pressure on both sides of the head and do not usually involve severe nausea, vomiting, or visual auras, which are characteristic of migraines (which involve Pitta dosha in Ayurveda).
How quickly does Shirodhara work for tension headaches?
Shirodhara often provides immediate relief from the acute stress and pain of a tension headache. However, for chronic tension headaches, a series of 7 to 14 sessions is recommended to reprogram the nervous system's response to stress.
