Anuvasana Basti (Oil Enema)
in Bengaluru

Anuvasana Basti is the administration of pure medicated oils or ghees via the rectal route. Unlike cleansing enemas, this is a deeply nourishing (Brumhana) therapy designed to lubricate the bodily tissues, pacify Vata, and strengthen the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.

Clinical Benefits

  • Provides deep tissue lubrication and reduces cellular dryness
  • Pacifies Vata dosha effectively without causing depletion
  • Nourishes the bones, joints, and nervous system
  • Improves sleep quality and calms anxiety

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Patient must consume a light meal prior to the procedure.
  • Local Abhyanga and mild Swedana are performed on the lower back.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

A specific quantity (usually 60-120ml) of lukewarm medicated oil is gently instilled into the rectum while the patient lies on their left side.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • The patient rests and is encouraged to retain the oil for an extended period, optimally up to 9-12 hours.
  • Gentle tapping on the buttocks helps the oil ascend and coat the colon walls.

Patient FAQs

Do I have to hold the oil all day?

The oil is meant to be absorbed by the colon walls. Many patients retain it effortlessly overnight or for many hours. If it comes out earlier, it simply means the colon has absorbed what it needs.

Why is it done after eating?

Unlike a cleansing enema (which is done on an empty stomach), Anuvasana Basti is nourishing. Having a light meal prevents the digestive fire from acting aggressively on the administered oil.
