External Therapy Protocol

Bahya Snehana (External Oleation)
in Bengaluru

Bahya Snehana encompasses all forms of external oil applications to the body. It includes full-body massages (Abhyanga), localized oil pooling (Basti), and pouring of oils (Dhara). It is a foundational therapy for calming Vata dosha and nourishing the skin and muscles.

Clinical Benefits

  • Softens the skin and improves complexion
  • Relaxes muscle tension and reduces physical fatigue
  • Enhances blood circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Prepares the skin and superficial tissues to release toxins

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Selection of specific herbal oils based on the patient's doshic imbalance (e.g., Mahanarayana Taila for Vata).

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

The warm medicated oil is applied to the skin in specific directional strokes, allowing transdermal absorption of the herbal properties.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • Usually followed by Swedana (steam therapy) to open pores and enhance oil penetration.

Patient FAQs

Does the oil actually penetrate the skin?

Yes, Ayurvedic oils are specially processed using lipid-soluble herbal extracts. When applied warm with specific friction techniques, they penetrate the epidermis and reach the deeper fascial and muscular layers.
