Gandusha (Oil Pulling / Liquid Holding)
in Bengaluru
Gandusha is the practice of completely filling the mouth with a medicated liquid (usually warm oil like Sesame oil or Ksheerabala) and holding it totally still until secretions appear in the eyes and nose. It is a profound therapy for the cranial nerves and jaw.
Clinical Benefits
- Strengthens the jawbone, voice, and facial muscles (excellent for TMJ and Bell's Palsy)
- Cures severe tooth sensitivity and bleeding gums
- Draws out deep-seated Vata and Kapha toxins from the head and neck region
- Improves facial complexion and prevents wrinkles
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • A mild massage and steam are applied to the neck and face. Warm medicated oil is prepared.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The patient completely fills their mouth with the oil so that no movement (swishing) is possible. The patient holds the liquid still with the chin slightly elevated.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The patient holds the oil until the mouth fills with watery secretions or tears appear in the eyes (indicating toxins are drawn out), then spits it out.
- • Mouth is rinsed with warm salt water.
Patient FAQs
Why can't I swish the oil around like in oil pulling?
Modern "oil pulling" is actually Kavala. True Gandusha involves holding the mouth completely full and still. The sustained pressure and lack of movement force the medicinal properties deeper into the cranial nerves and jaw structures.
