Jalaukaavacharana (Leech Therapy)
in Bengaluru
Jalaukaavacharana (Hirudotherapy) is the application of medicinal leeches to a specific body part to extract vitiated blood. Because leeches naturally secrete hirudin (a powerful blood thinner and anti-inflammatory enzyme), it is the gentlest and most effective bloodletting method for Pitta disorders.
Clinical Benefits
- Miraculous relief for Varicose Veins, breaking down localized clots and improving circulation
- Sucks out localized toxins and rapidly reduces acute swelling in Gout
- Highly effective for acne, eczema, and psoriasis lesions
- Promotes vascularization and healing in diabetic foot ulcers and gangrene
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Non-poisonous medicinal leeches are purified in turmeric water.
- • The affected skin area is cleaned and slightly roughened to induce a tiny drop of blood.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The leech is applied to the spot. It bites (feeling like an ant bite) and begins to suck blood. It naturally detaches once it is full (usually after 30-45 minutes).
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The bite mark continues to ooze blood for several hours due to the hirudin; this is therapeutic and expected.
- • The wound is dressed tightly with turmeric powder to stop bleeding.
Patient FAQs
Are the leeches reused?
No. In modern Ayurvedic practice, medicinal leeches are strictly single-use per patient to absolutely prevent any cross-infection.
