Janu Basti (Knee Oil Pooling)
in Bengaluru
Janu Basti is a specialized localized therapy for the knees. A boundary of black gram dough is built around the knee joint (Janu), and warm medicated oil is pooled inside to lubricate the joint, nourish the cartilage, and relieve severe pain.
Clinical Benefits
- Deeply lubricates the knee joint, reducing friction and crepitus (clicking sounds)
- Relieves severe knee pain and stiffness associated with Osteoarthritis
- Strengthens the ligaments, tendons, and muscles supporting the knee
- Helps prevent or delay the need for total knee replacement surgery
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • The patient lies supine with legs extended. A dough ring is fixed securely over the patella and surrounding joint.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
Warm medicated oil (like Murivenna or Mahanarayana) is poured into the dough ring. The therapist continuously replaces cooling oil with hot oil to maintain a therapeutic temperature.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The oil is removed, followed by a gentle massage around the knee and localized steam (Nadi Sweda).
Patient FAQs
Can Janu Basti regenerate my knee cartilage?
While it cannot regrow lost bone, the deep penetration of warm herbal oils nourishes the synovial membrane, increases joint fluid, reduces inflammation, and dramatically improves mobility, often providing years of pain-free movement.
