Karma Basti is the most intensive and comprehensive Basti course in Ayurveda, consisting of 30 enemas (18 Anuvasana/oil and 12 Niruha/decoction). It is reserved for the most severe, deeply entrenched Vata disorders and profound neurological deficits.

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Extensive psychological and physical preparation, including Snehapana, Abhyanga, and Swedana.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

Starts with 1 oil enema, followed by 12 alternating decoction and oil enemas (12 each), and concludes with 5 continuous oil enemas to deeply nourish the cleansed colon. (Total 18 Oil, 12 Decoction).

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • Requires a prolonged recovery period (Paschat Karma) equal to or double the length of the treatment with a strict diet.

Do I have to stay in the hospital for 30 days?

Yes, Karma Basti requires strict in-patient monitoring. The diet, physical activity, and exposure to wind/cold must be perfectly controlled to prevent complications during such a deep detox.
