Karna Dhoopana (Ear Fumigation)
in Bengaluru
Karna Dhoopana is an Ayurvedic ENT procedure where medicated herbal smoke is gently directed into the ear canal. It is highly effective for drying up ear discharge, killing fungal infections, and reducing pain.
Clinical Benefits
- Instantly relieves severe earache associated with infections (Otitis Media/Externa)
- Highly antimicrobial; cures chronic fungal ear infections (Otomycosis)
- Dries up pus and watery discharge from the ear
- Provides a soothing, warm sensation that calms aggravated Vata in the ear
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Antimicrobial herbs like Guggulu, Neem, and Turmeric are placed on hot coals in a specialized fumigator with a thin nozzle.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The patient lies on their side. The nozzle is held slightly away from the ear, and the warm, medicated smoke is directed to flow gently into the ear canal.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The ear is wiped clean. It is often followed by inserting a small cotton swab with oil.
Patient FAQs
Does this replace ear drops?
In Ayurveda, if an ear has pus or fungal discharge, putting oil (Karna Purana) makes it worse by creating a moist environment. Karna Dhoopana (smoke) is the treatment of choice because it is dry, penetrating, and kills the fungus rapidly. Oil drops are used only when the ear is clean and dry.
