Karnapoorana (Ear Oiling Therapy)

Karnapoorana is a specialized Ayurvedic therapy where the ear canal is filled with warm, medicated oil or herbal liquids. It is the gold-standard treatment for all Vata-related disorders of the ear, including tinnitus, hearing loss, and vertigo.

Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • A gentle massage (Abhyanga) and mild steam are applied to the ear lobes and surrounding neck region.
- • Patient lies on their side.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
Warm medicated oil (like Bilvadi or Ksheerabala Taila) is slowly poured into the ear canal until it is full. The base of the ear is gently massaged to ensure deep penetration.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The oil is retained for a specific time (usually 5-15 minutes).
- • Patient turns over, the oil is drained, and the ear is wiped clean with sterile cotton.

Can this cure tinnitus?
Tinnitus is fundamentally considered a severe Vata imbalance in the auditory nerves. Karnapoorana is highly effective in reducing the intensity of the ringing and, in many cases, can completely resolve it, especially when combined with Shirodhara and Nasya.

Contraindications
- Ruptured or perforated tympanic membrane (eardrum)
- Active ear infections with pus or fluid discharge (Otitis Media)
- Severe ear wax impaction (wax must be cleared first)
