Kavala (Ayurvedic Gargling)
in Bengaluru
Kavala is the therapeutic practice of swishing and gargling medicated liquids (like herbal decoctions, oils, or salt water) in the mouth. Unlike Gandusha (where the mouth is held full without movement), Kavala involves active movement of the liquid.
Clinical Benefits
- Highly effective for treating sore throats, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis
- Clears thick mucus (Kapha) from the throat and oral cavity
- Improves oral hygiene, strengthening teeth and gums
- Enhances the sense of taste and cures bad breath (halitosis)
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • A specific liquid (e.g., Triphala decoction for infections, or Arimedas Taila for gums) is prepared and warmed.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The patient takes a comfortable amount of liquid into the mouth and vigorously swishes it around the oral cavity and gargles in the throat.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • Once the liquid mixes with saliva and becomes thin, or if the mouth feels full of mucus, it is spat out. This is repeated several times.
- • Mouth is rinsed with warm water.
Patient FAQs
How is this different from regular mouthwash?
Commercial mouthwashes often contain harsh alcohols that destroy the oral microbiome. Kavala uses biocompatible herbal decoctions or oils that naturally heal infections while strengthening the mucosal lining.
