Matra Basti (Small Daily Oil Enema)
in Bengaluru
Matra Basti is a highly safe, mild oil enema administered in a very small dose (Matra). Unlike larger enemas that require strict dietary regimens and rest, Matra Basti can be given daily to almost anyone, including the elderly, children, and pregnant women, to constantly nourish the colon and pacify Vata.
Clinical Benefits
- Safely and gently treats chronic constipation without causing dependency
- Provides daily nourishment to the nervous system, crucial in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's
- Prevents wasting and emaciation in the elderly
- Requires no strict dietary restrictions or prolonged bed rest
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • A very small quantity (usually 60-72 ml) of medicated oil (like Dhanwantaram or simple Sesame oil) is warmed slightly.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The patient lies on their left side after a meal. The oil is slowly introduced into the rectum using a syringe or enema can.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The patient rests for a few minutes. The oil may be retained for several hours or overnight, slowly absorbing into the colon.
Patient FAQs
Will this make me rush to the toilet?
Usually not. Because the quantity of oil is very small (around 60 ml), the colon absorbs most of it for nourishment rather than expelling it immediately.
