Panchakarma Protocol

Niruha Basti (Decoction Enema)
in Bengaluru

Niruha Basti is a crucial Panchakarma therapy involving the administration of an herbal decoction mixed with honey, rock salt, oil, and herbal paste into the rectum. It is the primary treatment for Vata disorders and deeply cleanses the colon while nourishing the entire nervous system.

Clinical Benefits

  • Eliminates accumulated morbid Vata dosha from its primary seat in the colon
  • Relieves severe chronic constipation and abdominal bloating
  • Highly effective for neuro-muscular and joint disorders like sciatica and arthritis
  • Cleanses the micro-channels (Srotas) of the body

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Local Abhyanga (oil massage) applied to the abdomen and lower back.
  • Mild localized Swedana (fomentation) to the abdomen.
  • Patient lies comfortably in the left lateral position.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

A specific emulsion (Basti Dravya) prepared with rock salt, honey, herbal oil, herbal paste, and a warm herbal decoction is systematically introduced into the rectum using a Basti Putaka or a sterile enema kit.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • Patient rests in a supine position until the urge to evacuate occurs.
  • After evacuation, a warm bath is advised.
  • A light, easily digestible meal like rice gruel is served.

Patient FAQs

Is Niruha Basti painful?

No, the procedure is generally painless. The herbal emulsion is warm and introduced gently. Patients usually feel a sense of fullness in the abdomen, followed by profound relief after evacuation.

How is it different from a regular enema?

While a standard water enema only physically cleanses the lower colon, Niruha Basti uses complex herbal emulsions that actively draw out systemic toxins from all over the body and have a specific therapeutic action on the nervous and skeletal systems.
