Patra Pinda Sweda (Elakizhi)
in Bengaluru

Patra Pinda Sweda (also known as Elakizhi in Kerala Ayurveda) utilizes boluses filled with fresh, medicinal leaves with anti-inflammatory properties (like Eranda, Nirgundi, and Arka) roasted in herbal oils. It is a highly potent therapy for Vata-Kapha joint disorders.

Clinical Benefits

  • Provides profound relief from joint inflammation, swelling, and pain
  • Highly effective for sciatica, spondylosis, and sports injuries
  • Improves blood circulation and relieves chronic muscle cramps
  • Acts as both a deeply penetrating massage and a heat therapy

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Fresh leaves of specific medicinal plants are chopped, fried with garlic, lemon, and herbal powders in oil, and tied into cloth boluses (Kizhi).
  • Patient receives a brief Abhyanga.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

The boluses are heated in a pan of warm medicated oil. Two therapists vigorously massage and stamp the entire body (or affected joints) with the hot boluses, ensuring continuous heat and pressure.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • The herbal residue and oil are wiped off.
  • Patient rests, followed by a warm water bath.

Patient FAQs

Why use leaves instead of just oil?

The specific leaves used (like Nirgundi and Castor leaves) possess powerful natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. When heated and pounded into the skin, the active juices penetrate deeply into the joint capsule.
