Pizhichil (Kayaseka / Oil Bath)
in Bengaluru
Pizhichil, a crown jewel of Kerala Panchakarma, translates to "squeezing." It involves continuously squeezing warm medicated oil from a cloth over the entire body, combining the profound benefits of both heavy oleation (Snehana) and heat therapy (Swedana).
Clinical Benefits
- The most potent therapy for severe Vata disorders like paralysis and hemiplegia
- Arrests muscle wasting and promotes tissue regeneration
- Deeply lubricates the joints, curing severe osteoarthritis and stiffness
- Rejuvenates the entire nervous system and prevents premature aging
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Up to 3-4 liters of specific medicated oils (like Dhanwantaram or Sahacharadi) are heated to a comfortable temperature.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
Four therapists synchronize to dip clean linen cloths into the hot oil and squeeze the oil over the patient's body while simultaneously massaging with their other hand.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The oil is scraped off gently.
- • Patient must rest strictly and avoid cold water, wind, and heavy food.
Patient FAQs
Why not just sit in a bathtub of oil?
The therapeutic value of Pizhichil comes from the continuous rhythm of the pouring from a specific height, combined with synchronized massage. This forces the active herbs into the tissues, whereas simply soaking does not provide the necessary kinetic friction and circulation.
