Pratisarana (Herbal Friction / Rubbing)
in Bengaluru

Pratisarana involves rubbing fine herbal powders, pastes, or honey directly onto the gums, teeth, or tonsils using the finger. It is the primary Ayurvedic treatment for oral cavity disorders, gum disease, and chronic throat infections.

Clinical Benefits

  • Stops bleeding gums and strengthens loose teeth (Periodontitis)
  • Scrapes away severe plaque and tartar
  • Reduces heavy swelling in the tonsils (when applied to the throat)
  • Heals painful mouth ulcers rapidly

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • A fine powder (like Triphala or specific tooth powders) is mixed with honey or oil to form a paste.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

The therapist or the patient uses a clean index finger to vigorously massage and rub the paste over the gums, teeth, inner cheeks, or tonsils.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • The paste is retained for a few minutes, causing salivation.
  • The mouth is rinsed with warm water or a medicinal decoction (Kavala).

Patient FAQs

Is this better than modern toothpaste?

Ayurvedic Pratisarana uses astringent and bitter herbs (unlike sweet modern toothpastes) which specifically tighten the gums, stop bleeding, and destroy harmful oral bacteria naturally.
