Panchakarma Protocol

Raktamokshana (Therapeutic Bloodletting)
in Bengaluru

Raktamokshana is one of the five Panchakarma therapies, focused on the controlled removal of small quantities of vitiated (impure) blood. It is considered the ultimate treatment for severe Pitta and Rakta (blood) disorders. The most common and highly effective method used today is Jalaukavacharana (Leech Therapy).

Clinical Benefits

  • Rapidly reduces severe inflammation and localized redness
  • Removes stagnant, toxin-laden blood from local lesions
  • Leech saliva injects powerful natural anticoagulants (Hirudin) and anti-inflammatory peptides
  • Highly effective for stubborn skin diseases and severe acne
  • Provides immediate pain relief in acute gout and certain arthritis flares

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • The patient's bleeding and clotting times are assessed.
  • The target area is cleaned (without harsh chemicals).
  • Medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) are prepared by brief immersion in turmeric water to stimulate them.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

The leeches are applied to the specific affected area (e.g., an acne cyst or inflamed joint). The leech attaches painlessly and extracts the stagnant, impure blood. Simultaneously, it secretes over 100 bioactive substances into the wound. The leech falls off naturally when full (usually 30-45 minutes).

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • The bite site is cleaned and dusted with turmeric powder (or other hemostatic herbs) to stop the mild oozing.
  • A sterile bandage is applied.
  • The patient is advised to rest and avoid strenuous activity for the day.

Patient FAQs

Is Leech Therapy painful?

No. The saliva of the medicinal leech contains a natural anesthetic, so the bite feels like a tiny mosquito prick, followed by complete numbness in the area.

Is it safe and hygienic?

Absolutely. We use strictly cultured, medical-grade leeches in a sterile clinical environment. A leech is used only once per patient to completely eliminate any risk of cross-contamination.
