Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda (Njavarakizhi)
in Bengaluru

Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda (Njavarakizhi) is a deeply nourishing and strengthening therapy. Boluses made of a special medicinal rice (Shashtika Shali) cooked in milk and a herbal decoction (Bala Moola) are used to massage the body. It is the gold standard treatment for muscle wasting and neurological deficits.

Clinical Benefits

  • Nourishes and rebuilds wasted muscles (muscular atrophy)
  • Improves nerve conduction and is highly effective in paralytic conditions
  • Strengthens the physical body, deeply pacifies Vata, and improves skin complexion
  • Excellent rejuvenating therapy for the elderly and severely debilitated patients

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Special rice harvested in 60 days is cooked in a decoction of Sida cordifolia (Bala) and cow's milk, then tied into cloth boluses.
  • Patient receives a full body oil massage.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

The boluses are continuously dipped in a heated mixture of milk and herbal decoction and vigorously rubbed over the patient's body. The rice paste slowly oozes through the cloth, coating and nourishing the skin.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • The dried rice paste is scraped off the body using a palm leaf or dull edge.
  • Patient is bathed in warm water and given a light, nourishing diet.

Patient FAQs

Is this a heat therapy or a massage?

It is a unique combination of both (Snigdha Sweda). However, unlike other sweat therapies that aim to detoxify and deplete, Njavarakizhi is intensely nourishing (Brumhana), making it perfect for rebuilding weak tissues.
