Shiro Abhyanga (Head Massage)
in Bengaluru
Shiro Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of massaging the head, scalp, neck, and shoulders with warm medicated oils. It is a highly effective therapy for disorders of the central nervous system, stress, and scalp health.
Clinical Benefits
- Nourishes the scalp, prevents hair fall, and prevents premature graying
- Relieves tension headaches and chronic migraines
- Calms the central nervous system, reducing anxiety and promoting deep sleep
- Improves sensory perception, especially vision and hearing
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Selection of oil based on Dosha (e.g., Brahmi oil for Pitta/stress, Bhringaraj for hair).
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
Warm oil is poured on the vertex of the head (Adhipati Marma). The therapist uses finger pads to deeply massage the scalp, followed by the neck and upper shoulders to release trapped Vata.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The oil is ideally left on the scalp for a few hours before washing.
- • Patient should avoid cold drafts and cold water bathing.
Patient FAQs
Should I wash my hair immediately after?
It is best to leave the medicated oil on the scalp for at least 30 to 60 minutes, or even overnight, to allow the herbs to penetrate the hair follicles and calm the nervous system.
