Uttara Basti in males involves the sterile instillation of medicated oils or decoctions directly into the urinary tract (urethra) reaching up to the bladder. It is a highly specialized treatment for severe urinary and prostatic disorders.

Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Strict aseptic precautions are taken. The patient is asked to void urine completely before the procedure.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
Using a sterile, specialized Uttara Basti netra (or modern sterile catheter), warm medicated oil or decoction is gently pushed into the urethra.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The patient rests for some time. The medicine coats and heals the inner lining of the urethra and bladder.

Does instilling oil into the urethra cause infections?
When performed in a sterile clinical setting using properly sterilized medicated oils, the risk of infection is minimal. In fact, the procedure is used to cure chronic infections and heal strictures.
