Valuka Sweda (Sand Fomentation)
in Bengaluru

Valuka Sweda is a highly specific, intense dry fomentation therapy where purified, clean river sand is heated and tied into boluses. It is the absolute treatment of choice for Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and conditions presenting with severe inflammatory swelling and fluid retention.

Clinical Benefits

  • Provides intense, deeply penetrating dry heat to inflamed joints
  • Rapidly absorbs excess fluid and reduces localized edema/swelling
  • Relieves excruciating joint pain associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Digests localized Ama (toxins) without the use of heavy oils

Clinical Procedure

1. Preparation (Purvakarma)

  • Clean, purified sand (Valuka) is heated in an iron pan, sometimes with a pinch of rock salt, and tied into thick cloth boluses.

2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)

The therapist rapidly and rhythmically stamps the intensely hot sand boluses over the swollen and painful joints. The temperature is strictly monitored to prevent burns, as sand retains high heat.

3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)

  • The body is wiped with a dry towel.
  • Patient must avoid cold exposure completely.

Patient FAQs

Why sand? Why not a hot water bag?

Heated sand provides a very specific type of dry, penetrating heat (Ruksha Ushna) that physically absorbs moisture and reduces swelling much faster and deeper than a standard hot water bottle.
