Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)
in Bengaluru
Vamana is the first of the five Panchakarma therapies, consisting of medically induced vomiting. It is the primary and most powerful treatment for eliminating severely aggravated Kapha dosha and mucus from the respiratory tract and upper gastrointestinal tract.
Clinical Benefits
- Clears congestion and mucus from the lungs and chest
- Resets the upper respiratory and immune systems
- Highly effective for chronic asthma and allergies
- Helps in weight loss by aggressively reducing Kapha dosha
- Improves psychological conditions associated with Kapha (e.g., lethargy, depression)
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Deepana and Pachana: Correcting digestion.
- • Snehapana: Internal oleation with ghee for 3-7 days.
- • Abhyanga and Swedana: Oil massage and steam to mobilize Kapha.
- • Kapha Utkleshana: On the day prior, the patient eats a Kapha-provoking diet (e.g., yogurt, black gram) to bring all Kapha into the stomach.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
Early in the morning, the patient consumes a large quantity of a specific herbal decoction (often containing Madanaphala/Emetic nut and Yashtimadhu/Licorice). This safely induces vomiting, expelling the accumulated Kapha and toxins.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • Inhalation of medicated smoke (Dhumapana) to clear residual mucus in the airways.
- • Samsarjana Krama: A strict graduated dietary protocol starting with rice water (Peya) to slowly reignite the digestive fire.
- • Vocal and physical rest.
Patient FAQs
Is therapeutic vomiting uncomfortable or dangerous?
Unlike pathological vomiting (food poisoning or sickness) which is exhausting and dangerous, Vamana is a controlled, medically induced process. The stomach is pre-filled with specific soothing decoctions, making the expulsion smooth and largely effortless. Patients report feeling a profound sense of lightness in the chest immediately afterward.
Why do I have to eat heavy, Kapha-aggravating foods the night before?
This is called Utkleshana. The goal is to 'excite' the Kapha dosha throughout the body and draw it all into the stomach. By maximizing the Kapha in the stomach, the emesis process can efficiently expel a massive amount of the dosha in one session.
