Vethukuli (Medicated Herbal Bath)
in Bengaluru
Vethukuli is the traditional Kerala Ayurvedic practice of bathing post-natal mothers in water boiled with highly potent, pain-relieving, and antimicrobial herbs (like Nalpamaram). It immediately soothes the physical trauma of childbirth, relaxes fatigued muscles, accelerates the healing of perineal tears, and prevents puerperal infections.
Clinical Benefits
- Instantly relieves severe body aches and muscular fatigue
- Accelerates healing of episiotomy wounds and perineal tears
- Acts as a strong antimicrobial shield against postpartum infections
- Soothes the nervous system and induces deep, restorative sleep
Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Herbs like Nalpamaram (ficus tree bark), Tamarind leaves, and Nirgundi are boiled extensively in large volumes of water.
- • The mother receives a full-body oil massage (Sutika Abhyanga).
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The warm, medicated water is continuously poured over the mother's body using a specific rhythmic flow, focusing heavily on the lower back, pelvis, and thighs to relieve structural tension.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The body is gently dried.
- • Rasnadhi Choornam is applied to the crown of the head.
- • The mother is advised to rest in a warm room and avoid drafts.
Patient FAQs
Is Vethukuli safe if I had an episiotomy?
Yes, the herbs used (like Nalpamaram) are highly astringent and antimicrobial, which actually accelerates the healing of perineal tears and episiotomies.
Can I have Vethukuli after a C-section?
Full body pouring is avoided until the incision heals. However, we can perform targeted pouring on the legs and back while avoiding the abdominal incision.
