Vidalaka (Eye Paste Application)

Vidalaka is a specialized Ayurvedic ophthalmic procedure where a medicinal herbal paste is applied on the outer surface of the closed eyelids (avoiding the eyelashes). It is the first line of treatment for acute eye inflammation and infections.

Clinical Procedure
1. Preparation (Purvakarma)
- • Very fine, sterile powders of cooling and anti-inflammatory herbs (like Sandalwood, Lodhra, Licorice) are mixed with pure rose water or breast milk.
2. Main Action (Pradhana Karma)
The patient lies down with eyes closed. The paste is applied over the upper and lower eyelids in a semi-thick layer, strictly avoiding the eyelashes and the eye margins.
3. Post-Therapy (Paschatkarma)
- • The paste is removed while it is still slightly wet (usually 20 mins).
- • The eyes are gently washed with cold water or Triphala decoction.
Patient FAQs
Does the paste go inside the eye?
No. Vidalaka is strictly an external application on the skin of the closed eyelids. The skin of the eyelid is very thin, allowing the anti-inflammatory properties and intense cooling effect of the herbs to penetrate and soothe the eyeball beneath.

Contraindications
- Do not apply the paste in a way that it enters the eye (must stay on the lids)
- Not for degenerative eye diseases (like Macular Degeneration) where nourishing Tarpana is needed, not cooling/scraping
